Hello! I feel like my mind has been blown this week exploring all of the week 5 tools, but specifically wanted to comment on the Open Educational Resources (OER) Commons.
How have I never learned of this tool until now? 😤
In some ways, it resembles the Canvas Commons but more advanced. In OER, you can use the Open Author to build or publish resources either for yourself or the benefit of educators and learners everywhere. I found the overview video to be really helpful in learning about OER. I was impressed with the feature that allows you to remix (improve or change) resources.
Since I tend to create materials related to career development in my job, I thought that I would do a quick search for 'resume writing' and more than 40 results came up. Many of the results has copyright guidelines such as unrestricted use, conditional remix & sharing permitted, read the fine print, or only sharing permitted. I saved a Resume Writing lesson plan to explore what I could do next with it. I had the option to share via Twitter, WhatsApp, Pinterest, or Google Classroom (which by the way I don't really know anything about Google Classroom).
This is where I got a little confused. How do I reuse this Resume Writing resource? I researched a bit deeper and was able to located how-to videos along with a detailed resource for adding an LTI integration. I'm unfamiliar with the teaching bundle, ePub, and SCORM options to download these resources and clearly have a lot to learn about OER, but feel like I have a better sense of this incredible resource that brings groups of educators together to create and share learning resources. I found this TedTalk about about the power of Open Educational Resources and thought I would share!
What are your thoughts on OER? Have you created, remixed, or share OER Commons resources?
I had listened to a podcast a while back about the reason for the rise in textbook prices. If my memory serves me correctly it’s because of the used book market and digital rentals that have lowered the number of books being printed, driving the price of new books up.
ReplyDeleteI plan to spend some time next week on this and collect resources on criminal justice, diversity, inclusion, and equity for a white paper we are working on; lesson plans would be a wonderful find.
This is an exciting find as I often use the state library and the FSU library for resources, but this is directly related to education and training!! Thanks for the Tedx😎
