My experience with badging

It's been fun to try a new badging system over the past few weeks, such as Badge List.  Digital credentials have been buzzing around for several years now at my workplace.  My first impression of badges was influenced by staff who turned their nose up to badging, but now looking back I think that was due to a lack of knowledge or how to use the educational technology.  Either way, it took my workplace a few years to finally embrace the beauty of digital badging!  Now, I have the pleasure of managing an online digital badging career readiness program using Badgr through the Canvas integration at my institution.

Along with Badgr, I have experience using a platform called Portfolium in which customized pathways can be developed for upskilling and competency development programs to earn badges.  The stackable micro-credentials have become a major focus in my world over the past few years.  Many of the career programs that previously offered printed certificates of completion have switched gears toward digital badges.  They are portable and cost effective -- no printing costs or need to literally type the name of each student into the certificate template.  Buy bye 2000s!  I encourage my students to share their badges via social media, especially on LinkedIn.

While I am here, I might as well promote my program since all of the eme6414 are graduate students and could participate in earning more badges!!  We have a section of the program that is specifically for graduate students.  You can learn more about it here.

Badgr, Badge List, and even Portfolium all seem very similar in their delivery of badging platforms.  The major differences that I can find are related to cost and system integration specs.  Each platforms offers the ability to collect badges, verify completion/badge criteria, share badges, and connect with other badge participants (Badge List and Portfolium).  Although I have used Badgr extensively and appreciate the Canvas integration, I am really liking the look and feel of Badge List!  What do you all think about badging?  Do you have a favorite platform?

  1. I've not heard about ProfessioNole pathways and badges! I want to take a closer look at it to learn more about how badges are designed there. So, thanks for the link!

I also appreciate Badgr Canvas integration however it seems like it functions at module level (at least what I recognized). Badgelist is quite flexible; one can create badges individually and can also group these badges using tagging feature but badgelist doesn't have Canvas integration. I like badgelist as it functions pretty well, so far! :)

    1. Let me know if you have any questions about ProfessioNole Ready or Pathways! I've also integrated an AI software into the program that is for resume and interview reviews which is pretty neat. You are right though, Badgr Canvas integration is really only for the module level and I have enjoyed using Badgelist which feels like more immediate rewarding.

Final Reflection

Hello!  I guess this is my final blog post for EME6414 😥.  It's been fun but I don't plan to continue blogging after this class.  I...
