Why Quora Exists

Hello! You may want to ask me why I changed my blogger theme and added a random cat, but that is a question for Quora.  Just kidding.  I was simply exploring other themes and thought I would switch it now that we are a few weeks into blogging.  Most of you know that I am a cat mom by now so was 100% drawn to the cat if we want to be completely honest here.

On the the real question...why does Quora exist?  After signing up for an account and selecting a few topics to follow, my home page feed became inundated with posts that looked like a dumpster fire of questions and responses.

The first few questions on my feed were something like this...

1.) how do I get rid of toilet stains

2.) why do I always feel hungry even after I overeat or just ate my lunch?

3.) how many pounds of roast beef sandwiches for a party of 25?

HUH?!?  Immediately, I searched the site for an about us section or how-to video explaining what in the world I was looking at and why. These are all valid questions (especially feeling hungry after eating) but why were they randomly posted to this platform rather than typed into the google search?  I had a lot of questions myself. The About Us page helped to clarify somethings for me about Quora.  So this space is all about connecting people who have knowledge to people who need it and empowering everyone to share their knowledge.  Apparently Quora is "where the debate is happening" to learn from each other and understand the world and people in it.  The site claims to be a space for understanding why the world works the way it does.  That seems like a really tall order and at this point, I'm starting to question the validity of the knowledge sharing that will be experience on this platform. I will agree with the fact that Quora poses questions that I hadn't realized I needed to ask!  I'll give them that.  But the claims of being the most important insights that have never been shared anywhere else or the knowledge coming from people who "really understand the issues and have first-hand knowledge"...I'm skeptical.  Reddit seems quite similar to Quora in some ways but they don't boost to be the best of the best or that everything is factual.  Reddit seems to have more rules for the sharing of information and participation in communities.

Now, where I can see myself liking Quora is more of the entertainment topic spaces such as Netflix, Cooking, Television Series, food, traveling, etc.  I'm always looking for a new binge worthy series to watch or the best Netflix finds.  Some of the posts in my feed were funny gifs or interesting to look at but really very random, even within specific topics.  I do like the search box at the top where you can type in any question and see responses.  But again, why not type that same question into Google?  If you want a good laugh then Quora is humorous...just to see some of the questions people are asking.  No need to watch the entire YouTube video, or any of it at all, but this review of Quora made me belly laugh a few times. I'm so curious what others think and if you knew about Quora prior to EME6414?  I did not!

Hello!  I guess this is my final blog post for EME6414 😥.  It's been fun but I don't plan to continue blogging after this class.  I...
