Sweet Start to the Week

We made it to week two of the summer semester!  In northern Florida we have a medium pollen count today which means sneezing and sinus pressure for me, but full pollen baskets for my bees.

What is the pollen basket?  It's the amazing part of the honey bee (basically the hind legs) that harvest pollen and carry it to the nest or hive.  Apparently, it can take a single worker bee 3 to 18 minutes to complete a pollen load and fly back to the hive with it!  My car has been looking less yellow lately -- perhaps it is the honey bees collecting the pollen from my car.  Anyway, another interesting fact is that only the female (worker) bees have these incredible pollen baskets.

Watch this view to learn more about honey bees and see if you can spot the pollen baskets.

If you set up your Instagram this week, here are some cool hashtag recommendations to follow!

  • #beesofinstagram
  • #bees
  • #beekeepingadventures

It's amazing how I can use Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest to access resources for my beginning beekeeping adventures all through a simple hashtag.  Furthermore, I can share with you all my adventures and you can comment back if you have a question or want to contribute to the content.

I'll also be posting on @eme6414emily if you would like to follow my Insta.
