What in the Reddit?

The tool of the week is Reddit and the site tells me that "Reddit gets better when you join communities, so find some that you'll love".  As a complete stranger to Reddit this was a fun tool to explore.  Random Reddit threads tend to pop up in google searches a lot for me but I never dove deeper to find out the origin of the thread or why it was posted to Reddit in the first place!

A good starting point (if you are new like me) is your Home page.  Here you can browse the Best, Hot, New, or Top posts.  Keep in mind that these are posts from communities you belong to.  So if you are only in the #eme6414 community, you'll just see those posts in this feed.  If you join many communities, I can see how this filter would be super helpful to sift through all of the posts.

Click on the Browse Popular Posts to access posts across communities or perhaps look up a specific country!  Now that is pretty cool.

Looking to expand your communities?  I would click on the View All Communities for recommendations.  Look at all of those Crypto Communities!  I'll have to join one of those since I recently joined the DogeCoin craze and that is probably a fantastic community to join for learning more about buying, selling, trading.

So far, I joined a few communities and noticed they all tend to have an About the Community, keywords to Filter posts by, community rules or guidelines, where to start with the community, tags to search, a list of useful links pertaining to the community, and the list of moderators.  I had to look up what "doxxing" meant in the r/Tallahassee rules.  For my #eme6414 cat friends, I'd suggest checking out https://www.reddit.com/r/cats. Their #1 submission post rule is that is "must be about cats" 😻.

I have a lot to learn still but joining a few communities gave me a better feel for what in the Reddit I was doing.  The platform is doing some interesting things to integrate coins as a way to encourage contributors.  Sort of strange you can buy them as opposed to earning but I imagine this is used by "influencers".  Who knows!  I hope you all have fun exploring too.

  1. Hey Emily! I really appreciate this post because I've never had a reddit account and I'm completely lost and overwhelmed. I got as far as customizing my avatar and that was about it. I had always known about it and would come across a post usually from a random and very specific google search I made but never made the jump. This post is really useful so thank you!
